Also, some notes in some of the breaks are played quietly (written in brackets) whilst in other sections they are played normally.

For example, the last bar of the first break does not include an extra cross-stick on the “a” of beat 4. Each open Hi-Hat only lasts a sixteenth note and is punctuated with the bass drum.Īll three sections are very similar to each other with only a few variations. The second bar involves the this offbeat set of Hi-Hat open and close stabs occurring on the “e” and “a” of beat 3 and the “e” of beat 4. The bass drum written inside brackets are played very quietly and can barely be heard on the recording. Look out for the open Hi-Hat on the “a” of beat 3. The first break, as well as the other two, follow this two bar pattern involving the first bar playing around with the bass drum and cross-stick.

In this free drum lesson, I have the drum breaks from “ Use Me” by Bill WIthers, featuring the drumming of James Gadson.Īll three of the breaks transcribed below feature one handed sixteenth notes being played on the Hi-Hat and the use of the cross-stick.
